From The Reagan Diaries, edited by Doug Brinkley, forthcoming from Harper Collins (including photo):
"A moment I've been dreading. George brought his n'er-do-well son around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the political one who lives in Florida; the one who hangs around here all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already almost 40 and has never had a real job. Maybe I'll call Kinsley over at The New Republic and see if they'll hire him as a contributing editor or something. That looks like easy work."

Seriously, folks-- how did the American masses miss what Reagan knew in frickin' '86? Oof. I continue in my bafflement.

Yeah, and now it is surely no longer "morning in America"... maybe "mourning in America" would be a good historical tagline for the W administration. How did it happen? Massive right-wing conspiracy, featuring Evil Genius in politics, and Evil Doofi in running wars and foreign policy. Occasionally it seems, evil rears its ugly head, and sometimes it looks like Alfred E. Newman. -Dana
Well, I guess, what did we expect? When amorphous fears-- fear of queers, fear of non-whites, fear of "the intelluctual elite"-- run high, people don't vote with their brains. And what do we get? A government that runs on knee-jerk emotionalism and utter lack of reason, of course. We asked for stupid and we got it. There is no real mystery here, except that I don't really understand that of which we are all so afraid-- in the first fucking place!
Those who strive to rule and control (priestcraft, politicians, depending on era) use fear (hell, terrorists, whatever) and guilt (mostly rel. to sex) to herd the masses into whatever corner seems convenient at the time. It's all based on illusion, but seems to work. Each one can extricate themselves, which is challenging enough, but it's really hard to wake up the whole world... Corporate ownership of media makes it even harder... Bread and circus, y'know. -dana
