*Sigh*

Here's a post-vacation list of things I really do miss about my hometown, in no particular order.

1. Seeing Faith Hill at the mall, looking not at all like she does in videos

2. Nola, the Cajun/Uruguayan restaurant on West End

3. The shepherd's pie from Family Wash in East Nashville

4. Lightning 100 (there's not one goddamn decent radio station in DC!)

5. The fried green tomatoes at Jackson's in Hillsboro Village

6. Yazoo beer

7. The dude at daVinci's Pizza who makes googly eyes at me every single solitary time I go in there

8. Woo, the best cosmetics store ever

9. Getting pedicures with my mom

10. The Cotillionistas

11. Finding fruit tea at most restaurants

12. Movie after movie with Jon

13. Not having to Mapquest every-damn-thing so as to find my way around

14. Talking politics with my dad over coffee in the morning

15. Baja Burrito (Chipotle, you don't hold a candle!)

16. La Senorita Holly "Bunnyface" Meadows

17. People who know what both Red Velvet cake AND Chess pie are

18. Las Paletas (I have yet to taste the basil. Basil popsicle, you're waiting for me--taunting me,even-- aren't you?)

19. Seeing deer out the window during my yoga practice

20. And, of course, Noah, my beloved, beloved, beloved schmogface

mmmm shepherd's pie and a pint at family wash. how come you never order it if you love it? i think that is one of the coolest/most fun restaurants--we should have gone there more.

Yeah, radio stations in DC are uniformly awful.

I imagine that Faith Hill is really pretty underneath her 10 gallons of makeup. Is that true?

faith hill is prettier in person and tiny- i met her several years ago when she was pregnant and she was still thin thin thin-she seemed pretty nice. Also met Martina McBride the same night--snore--and Ashley Judd was supposed to be there but never showed up and I have to admit it whether I want to or not--I would have been excited to meet her.

seeing/meeting country music people in this town is generally typical and boring (for the most part). Nicole Kidman-a bit more exciting? supposedly she was seen at Wild Oats quite a bit for a while but I never did.

Lets see--I also saw Fred Thompson at Starbucks in Green Hills several years ago. He grinned at me like he was charming me into voting for him one day--wrong.

Faith Hill looks about 20 years older in real life than she does on TV. Attractive, but like a 45-yr-old woman who's had a rough life (I think she's somewhere in her mid-30s... so...) And she's definitely NOT tiny. She's about 9 feet tall and not fat at all but not a small woman, by any means. Martina McBride? I sold her $700 worth of clothes when I worked in the mall in high school. She looks like she's about 60 without makeup. And has some serious hips.

Amy Grant's the only one who I actually think is more attractive in real life. And Jo Dee Messina-- she's adorable! And they're both really really really sweet.

I did look over into the next bowl when I was at the hair salon once-- only to find Leann Rimes. She's really very pretty but so thin she looked a little frail. Her husband, though? So hot I swear he's out of her league!!!

when I saw Faith Hill it was probably close to ten years ago so . . . she was tiny--pregnant and very thin for being pretty far along. Much prettier in person though. She definitely didn't look 20 years older in real life.

Remember when we saw Martina McBride at Bobbie's a few months ago? Her husband (I guess husband) was sitting in their SUV and smoking a cigarette with the kids in there. He was holding it out the window but still.

Oh, thank you both for feeding both my country music addiction and my pointless obsession with famous people!

Not surprised that Jo Dee Messina is nice. I laughed as I read that comment, given that I had to work really hard today at not replying to a stupid work-related email with: "Sorry, my give a damn's busted." LOVE that song, cheesy as it is.

I guess what I said wasn't true--seeing famous people must not be completely boring or else it wouldn't be fun to talk about would it?

Oh well. The cynical side of me wants to believe that the only reason that Martina McBride even goes to Bobbie's Dairy Dip is because more genuine musicians like EmmyLou Harris are known for going there. But hell, Ms.McBride is a person too, maybe she and her kids like ice cream.

Still, if I were in Country Music I would definitely want to hang out with people like Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and Rodney Crowell and not so much Faith and Martina.

wait, wait... can I drop some more names?

I've sold a baseball-capped
Emmylou many a book. She is so uber-shy that it's kinda touching.

Of course, there's Reese and high school.

Then there's making out w/ James Van Der Forehead on college... oh, crap, did I admit that in a public forum?

Pam Tillis has a West Highland Whit Terrier named Buddy.

Clint Black's wife-- Lisa Hartman Black-- absolutely gorgeous.

Tim McGraw is awfully cute for a bald guy.

Naomi Judd is also really pretty in real life... Wynona on the other hand? Wow! Loud and tres porky.

Vince Gill is actually skinnier in real life, though, still a sizeable barrel-chested sort of man.

Carl Perkins was a serious weirdo.

Oh, and I once physically bumped into Eric Stolz at the cafeteria in the basement of the Met in NYC. That'll teach me to look where I'm going...

And then there's the birthday cake I baked for Tipper Gore that she and Al never got to eat... oh, well..

Yeah, there really ARE a lotta famous people in Nashville, huh?

Glad we can entertain you, Ginger! Please do be very impressed!

Oh!!! I forgot to mention several of my fellow booksellers and I plotting to throw tomatoes at Bill Frist. He smiles so smugly... doesn't he know that people who who in bookstores and hippies and crazies and not likely to think too kindly about his adopting the posture of presidential lapdog?

I've got some L.A. ones from when I worked on the Warner Bros. lot--can't remember many of them though. Some of the people from ER
